Liquid Carbon Dioxide

Liquid carbon dioxide is a colourless, odourless liquid. Under normal temperature and pressure, carbon dioxide is a colourless gas with a slightly sour taste and smell. It is 50% heavier than air and as such can be poured from one container to another.

By increasing the pressure and lowering the temperature, carbon dioxide can be easily liquefied and stored in a liquid state at temperatures from +31 to -57 °С (depending on the pressure). Below -57 °С, carbon dioxide is in solid state (dry ice). The pressure needed for liquefaction depends on the temperature: at 21 °С, it is 60 bar, and at -18 °С it is 20 bar. Liquid CO2 is stored in sealed containers at a correct pressure. When passing into the atmosphere, carbon dioxide turns into gas or into “carbon snow” when the temperature drops to -84 °С.

Main applications of liquid carbon dioxide include:

  • Production of carbonated beverages
  • Use as a protective gas in welding
  • Production of dry snow and dry ice
  • Use as a coolant in food and chemical industry
  • Use in fire extinguishing systems.
